New Mexican Folk Art Santos Shrine
New Mexican Folk Art Santos Shrine. Circa 1890.
19th century Spanish Colonial shrine for a Santos or statue of the Virgin Mary in the form of a church. Mexican, or possibly from New Mexico. Topped with three crosses, two cupolas housing two gilt wood bells each, a silver gilt dove in center representing the Holy Spirit. The sides with two arched windows each, the interior with a plinth for a carved Santos or Madonna, painted black with stars in the background. Lovely carved details throughout including turned finials on the roof. Clearly created with reverence and care by a master carver, this will make a great home for that treasured carving, a personal shrine, or a wonderful architectural conversation piece. Great scale at almost 4 feet tall.
