18th Century French Rococo Gilt Wood Mantle Mirror
18th century French Rococo gilt wood over-mantle mirror with original glass and gilding. What a wonderful mirror this is, in original condition, carved in the Rococo style. The carving is both exuberant and refined. The glass is in three sections, the original back appears never to have been removed, held in place by hand wrought rose-head nails. The back is almost as compelling as the front!
This piece is carved in the more elegant Rocaille style. Rocaille was exuberant and inspired by nature like Rococo, but it was usually more symmetrical and not overloaded with decoration. It took its name from the mixture of rock, seashell and plaster that was used to create a picturesque effect in grottos during the Renaissance, and from the name of a seashell-shaped ornament which was frequent feature of Rocaille decoration.
This piece is carved with delicate S and C curves, floral motifs, all topped by a beautiful openwork seashell.
While there is something to be said for clean modern lines, there is nothing like the beauty of this kind of carving. Think about the work that went into creating this piece and the impact it will make in any interior.

Wear consistent with age and use. Some loss to the gilded surface expected in a piece this vintage. One small break, lower right. Overall remarkable condition considering the delicate carving and age.
