Portrait by Paul Cesar Helleu (French, 1859-1927) "My Wife Alice Seated, Three Quarter"
circa 1895 - a signed drypoint on laid paper by Paul Cesar Helleu. Helleu was the portrait master of the literary and aristocratic circles of Paris, London and New York in the "Belle Epoque." A socialite himself, he was in great demand and soon his client list read like a"Who's Who" of the International elite. In 1904 he was awarded the Legion d'Honneur. In 1912 he was commissioned to paint the astrological ceiling decoration in New York's Grand Central Station, which has since become a landmark. Helleu's drypoints were only published in very small editions, often less than 20 examples, which maintained very high standards in the quality of the prints. He destroyed the copper plates from which his drypoints were printed in 1920.
