17th Century Spanish Carved Walnut Door Panel
A really gutsy and interesting early 17th century carved wood panel. If this kind of thing appeals to you, it does to me, than this is a compelling example of early carving and the patina that only comes from age and use. This panel was a door to a cabinet or chest, or even a hidden wall compartment. The thickness of the wood argues for that possibility. The original cotter pin hinges are intact with their splayed ends melding into the carving in front. It is a thick piece of wood, with the rich, waxed patina on the front and the deep oxidation on the reverse. There is a small hole for a key or handle that turned a latch. This is not for everyone, but if you appreciate early wood carving, patina and the presence of the past in an inanimate object, you have found your lodestone. From a New York City private collection.
