Indian Silvered Bronze Buddhist Deity Vajradhara Seated in Lotus Position
Wonderful small silvered bronze of Vajradhara. Indian, circa 1900. 7 inches high by 4 wide by 3 deep
The Tibetan Buddhist deity Vajradhara is seated in a yogic meditation on a lotus pedestal. His hands hold identifying attributes, the dorje (vajra, thunderbolt scepter denoting clarity of mind) and the prayer bell (ghanta), here associated with wisdom (prajna). The deity displays fine robes with decorated borders, and a large and elaborate ritual crown and floral ear ornaments. Vajradhara’s robe is placed around the shoulders in a style evolved from the Central Asian cloudcollar.
Vajradhara, the 'Indestructible', lord of all mysteries, master of all secrets. According to Mahayana school, it is to Vajradhara that the subdued and conquered evil spirits swear allegiance and renounce all active opposition to the Buddhist faith.
