Alfred THESONNIER "Still Life with Apples and a Crock" Signed and dated Alfred Thesonnier 26 Remnants of exhibition tags and stamps on the back of the stretcher Oil on canvas – Excellent condition Original, hand-carved, patinated, Montparnasse-style, wooden frame Thesonnier lost his parents at a young age and was raised in a public orphanage. That early misfortune did not alter his motivation to make a better life for himself and his drive to pursue his passion for painting. The artist received his formal training at "l'Ecole des Beaux-arts" in Dijon. Shortly after, he was admitted to compete in Paris at the highly-regarded "Salon des Artistes Français" where he was awarded a Bronze-Medal in 1927 and a Silver-Medal in 1935. He also exhibited at the avant-garde "Salon des Indépendants" in Paris. Thesonnier had a wide range of subject matters from landscapes to still-life, nudes and portraits. He settled in Auvergne, a mountainous and rural region in the center of France whose gorgeous snow-covered landscapes attracted many leading artists becoming part of the "Ecole de Murol" named after a picturesque village of the area. The artist was also a professor at "l'Ecole des Beaux-Arts" in Clermont-Ferrand, the capital of Auvergne. • Museums: The artist' works can be seen at the Murol museum. • Literature: - Benezit: Dictionnaire des Peintres, 1999
